Hiya! How you doin’? The past week was a bit rough for me. I got sick with the flu and the coughing fits still don’t cease. Anyway.
As you might remember, one of the Parts of speech that make up the English language are “PRONOUNS”. There are different types of pronouns: object pronouns, possessive pronouns, etc. In today’s post, we will review “PERSONAL PRONOUNS”.
Personal pronouns are words that we use to replace the name of a person or a thing in a sentence. These personal pronouns usually replace the name of the person or thing when we refer to it as the subject of our sentence. By the way, the most simple structure of a sentence is as follows:
Subject + verb + complement.
Here’s an example of a simple sentence and how we can use the corresponding personal pronoun:
Valeria likes dogs – She likes dogs
When we use the personal pronouns, we have to take into account the perspective, that is, who we are talking about:
The 1st person perspective usually refers to the person speaking, for example, my name is Mirna, and when I talk about me I use the pronoun “I”, in singular, or of I’m talking about a group of people that includes me, I use “WE”.
The 2nd person perspective refers to someone I am talking to, for example “YOU” are reading this entry, whether its only “YOU” (one person) or “YOU” if there’s someone else with you (a group of people that includes you).
And the 3rd person perspective refers to people that is not you or I, for example, you and I (WE) are talking about Valeria (the girl from the example above. My name isn’t Valeria, and neither is yours… I hope 😀 ) , so, instead of saying her name, we say “SHE”. If we were talking about Hugo instead, we can say “HE”. If we are talking about Valeria and Hugo at the same time, or about a group of people that includes Valeria and Hugo, we say “THEY”.
When we talk about animals or things, we can replace the noun for the pronoun “IT”.
Here you have some examples on how we can use the personal pronouns to replace nouns in a simple sentence :
I like chocomint ice cream 😉
You are my best friend 😀
Sarah is happy – She is happy 🙂
Harry is very intelligent! – He is very intelligent!
The sun is yellow – It is yellow.
María and I are best friends! – We are best friends!
Your sister and you are twins – You are twins.
Sara and Harry are siblings – They are siblings.
Summing it up:
