Hello! How are you doing today? I hope your week has been interesting and fun 😀
As you may remember, in past weeks we have talked about nouns, pronouns and pronunciation, amongst other interesting topics. Today, we are going to talk about articles, that is also one of the parts of speech that conform the English Language 😉
What are the articles?
Articles are syllables that we use to reference or define a noun. We have two types of articles: Indefinite and definite articles:
Indefinite articles: A / AN
Definite article: THE
Indefinite Articles
This type of articles can be used to introduce nouns in a sentence or conversation that weren’t previously known. These articles usually state information in a non-specific way:
Look at the picture below. We have basket of fruits. Now read the following sentence:
“Lola wants a fruit.” In this sentence we don’t know what fruit does Lola want. It can be any from the basket.
When to use A / AN:
The two indefinite articles A / AN can be used to express singular nouns in a non-specific way.
The A article is employed with nouns that start with a consonant sound. Examples:
The AN article is employed with nouns that start with a vowel sound. Examples:
Definite Article
This definite article is “THE“. We can use the definite article “THE” to specify a noun or to identify a specific noun in a sentence or a conversation. This article can be used with singular and plural nouns.
Look at the picture below. We have a basket of fruits. Now read the following sentence:
“Lola wants the pineapple.” In this sentence, now we know what fruit does Lola want. She wants the pineapple that is in the fruit basket. We are using the definite article to specify what fruit Lola wants.
