Hi! I’m Mirna, nice to meet you!
My journey as a languages learner started since I was in elementary school, then I joined a private school specialized in the English language. After I ended the whole course, I thought the learning was over and that the knowledge I had acquired would last me a lifetime… but soon I would realize that it was not that easy. Knowledge comes and goes, but the things we truly focus on, the things we’re really interested in, are the ones that help us get the skills to navigate this wonderful adventure we call life. As soon as the English course I attended was over, I realized that the only way to keep that knowledge fresh and ready to use would be to practice. Practice, practice, practice as much as I could. Practice makes perfect, after all.
Why “Learn English the nerd way”, you may ask? Well, I’ve always considered myself a bit of a nerd when it comes to learning things I’m passionate about: I research and put information together to have the full picture of a topic that piqued my interest and dissect it until I’m satisfied with it or I’ve perfected it if it’s a craft. So, basically, the “nerd way” means to learn things my way 😀
Currently, I’m a certified English Teacher by Cambridge University, and I have a Master’s degree in Education, though teaching isn’t my bachelor’s degree. As life would have it, I worked as an English teacher for two years at a private university here in Mexico. This experience not only provided me with a taste of what being a teacher is, but allowed me to realize things about myself that I didn’t think I had in me, for example, how much I enjoy teaching things I’m knowledgable and passionate about.
I hope that you’ll find this blog interesting, since its main purpose is to share info about the English language that I find interesting or that could be helpful to you as a learner, or if you’re only looking to reaffirm your knowledge of the language, but that will not be all I’ll be doing here. I also want to use this blog to share with you two of my other passions: writing and music. For writing, I may randomly share an article with you that I write about the topic that has piqued my interest at the moment, or even something unrelated that comes to mind (I’d like to think that someday I’ll be a bestseller author, so be warned 😉 ). As for music… I’m an amateur singer. I like to listen and sing to most kinds of music: from a nice colombian salsa to the sweet operatic voices of symphonic metal to the cheery tones of K-pop (there, I said it 😀 ), so, the content will most likely be about me ranting about how much I loved a song or why this band is my favorite or why I consider this singer’s voice golden (though I’ll be sharing only my opinion based on the basic knowledge I have about singing, since I’m not a professional… yet 😉 )
Another of the multiple purposes for this blog is to (yes, you guessed!) practice my written English and share a bit of myself with the world. I aim to build a community where we can all share the things we love, the things that make us be who we are, and help us grow into better human beings by understanding other cultures/societies through the use of languages. Currently, I speak two languages: Spanish and English. I’ve dipped my feet in Japanese and French, so I hope one day in the near future I’ll be able to become a fluent speaker and knowledgeable in those languages to share what I know with you!
Since this blog is still under construction and I’m new to the whole concept of a blog, I’ll try my best to better the image and concept, and the presentation of the content I share with you.
I hope that, with your continued support, this blog grows and its content reaches as many people as possible. Thanks in advance for giving me and this blog a chance, I really really hope you come to love it!
XOXO Mir.
